Dr Patrick Smith
BA, MSc, PhD, CPsychol
Dr Patrick Smith is an honorary consultant clinical psychologist, working with the Mood Disorder Service, the Anxiety Service and the Child Traumatic Stress Service. He helped set up the Mood Disorder Clinic in 2008 and is now the team co-ordinator.
He is also a lecturer in clinical psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, and research director for their Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) programme.
He co-leads the Directorate’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) implementation group for depression and bipolar disorders.
He is member of the British Psychological Society’s Division of Clinical Psychology, the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP) and the Association for Child Psychology and Psychiatry.
Patrick sat his undergraduate degree (BA) at Oxford University and his Masters (MSc) and PhD at the University of London. On completing his clinical training (CPsychol), he worked for UNICEF in Bosnia, running a psychosocial programme for war-affected young people.
He has worked therapeutically with young people exposed to a variety of trauma since 1994.
He has continued his research on the effects of trauma on young people, alongside colleagues and students, and in liaison with King’s College Hospital’s Accident and Emergency department.
He led a randomised controlled trial of trauma-focused cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for post-traumatic stress disorder, showing that the intervention is highly effective for 8 to 18 year olds.
With colleagues, he developed computerised CBT (C-CBT) intervention for young people with depression, evaluated it in a case series, and is leading a schools-based randomised controlled trial.
