Challenging Behaviour Service
Location: Maudsley Hospital
Referrals are accepted from: Consultant psychiatrists, consultant psychologists, consultant paediatricians, GPs, GP consortia, mental health professionals
Key areas: Aggression, challenging behaviour, destructive behaviour, neurodevelopmental disorder, non-compliance
Our service is for young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disability where challenging behaviour is a primary concern. Challenging behaviour includes aggression directed at themselves or others, severe non-compliance and significant destructive behaviour.
We see young people across the intellectual ability spectrum. A systematic assessment of causes of challenging behaviour includes consideration of learnt behaviour, co-morbid psychiatric disorders, predisposing neurocognitive characteristics and physical problems.
We work closely with referrers to identify the most suitable care package and recommended management strategies, which involve behavioural interventions, environmental change, medication and treatment of co-morbid medical problems.
