Eligibility

Inpatient

  • Age 18+ years
  • A primary diagnosis of an anxiety disorder (e.g. obsessive compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, PTSD, health anxiety, specific phobias (especially of vomiting), tics and Tourette’s disorder
  • Willing to travel home independently on weekend leave (or with relatives or support initially)
  • Have basic self-care skills and are able to self-medicate
  • Have accommodation maintained in the community throughout to facilitate home leave. If a person’s condition deteriorates then a bed must be made available at the person’s local psychiatric hospital, or alternative arrangements made in the community within 24 hours
  • Have a nominated local key worker (preferably a trained cognitive behaviour therapist) who we can liaise with over discharge and ensure adequate follow-up
  • Willing to complete questionnaires to monitor progress; we prefer to have treatment sessions audio taped for supervision purposes
  • Able to undertake the treatment in a language shared with one of the therapists

Exclusion

Inpatient

  • Current psychosis or mania requiring active treatment
  • Current alcohol or substance dependence requiring treatment in its own right. People with alcohol and/or substance misuse can be seen if the misuse is not the main problem, and will not significantly interfere with CBT
  • Body Mass Index of 16 or less (unless a joint care option with the Eating Disorders Unit)
  • Severe depressive disorder as the main problem, requiring treatment in its own right
  • Borderline personality disorder as the main problem, requiring treatment in its own right; however, we are able to accept people who self-harm so long as there is no significant risk of severe injury, and the self-harm does not interfere with other residents who may have significant fears of contamination
  • Recent history of violence or harm to others that may jeopardise the safety of others on the unit
  • If taking psychotropic medication, the person should preferably be on a stable dose prior to starting treatment

Eligibility

Outpatient

  • Age 18+ years
  • A primary diagnosis of an anxiety disorder (e.g. obsessive compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, PTSD, health anxiety, social phobia, panic disorder and agoraphobia, specific phobias (especially of vomiting) or habit disorder (trichotillomania, skin-picking, tics, Tourette’s)
  • Willing to attend regular sessions and travel to the centre
  • Willing to complete questionnaires to monitor progress
  • Have a nominated local key worker (preferably a trained CBT therapist) who we can liaise with over discharge and ensure any necessary follow-up
  • If taking psychotropic medication, the person should be on a stable dose prior to starting treatment

Exclusion

Outpatient

  • Current psychosis or bipolar disorder requiring treatment
  • Current alcohol or drug dependence requiring treatment in its own right. People with alcohol and/or substance misuse can be seen if the misuse is not the main problem, and will not significantly interfere with CBT
  • Current severe depression requiring treatment in its own right, in particular immediate suicide risk
  • Borderline personality disorder that requires treatment in its own right
Please note: We take referrals for people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) who may be interested in psychological treatment or advice on medication. We do not generally carry out psychiatric or psychological assessments for people who are requesting a cosmetic procedure to be funded by their commissioner
